President Donald Trump on Friday toned down his push for Iranians to take over their government from its current regime, which now features a new Supreme Leader, as the U.S. and Israel continue their attacks in the Middle Eastern country. Trump previously pushed for Iranians to take to the streets in protest of the country’s regime and to take over the government when the fighting is done, promising it would be theirs “to take.”
The president changed that tone in a radio interview with Fox News host Brian Kilmeade where he admitted that the call could be easier said than done, given Iran’s plainclothes militia, the Basij.
“You just mentioned to me a group of people that go around with machine guns and shoot them down, and they say, ‘Anybody protests, we’re going to kill you in the streets,'” Trump said. “So I really think that’s a big hurdle to climb for people that don’t have weapons.
“So that’ll happen, but it probably will be, maybe not immediately,” he continued. “They literally have people in the streets with machine guns, machine-gunning people down if they want to protest.”
Trump said there is “virtually no military left” in Iran but the Basij is believed to have an estimated one million people in its ranks, according to the New York Times.
The president also admitted that the people of Iran might not be ready to finish the job of toppling the regime.
“We are creating the optimal conditions for toppling the regime,” he said, “but I won’t deny that I can’t tell you with all certainty that the people of Iran will topple the regime — a regime is toppled from the inside.”
