President Trump on Thursday threatened to use the Insurrection Act to stop attacks on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minnesota.”If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State. Thank you for you [sic] attention to this matter! President DJT,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The Insurrection Act is used to deploy the U.S. military or federalize the National Guard for domestic law enforcement.
Trump’s comment comes after a federal officer shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis on Wednesday. The officer was being attacked by three people, including one with a shovel and broom handle. The incident followed the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis last week after she hit an ICE officer.
In Minneapolis on Wednesday night, federal officers fired tear gas into a crowd while protesters threw rocks and shot fireworks, The Associated Press reported. Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a news conference that the gathering was an unlawful assembly and “people need to leave.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described the situation with federal officers in the city as not “sustainable.”
“This is an impossible situation that our city is presently being put in and at the same time we are trying to find a way forward to keep people safe, to protect our neighbors, to maintain order,” he said.
