President Donald Trump issued a proclamation Friday that quadruples the amount of beef imported into the U.S. from Argentina under a new trade deal that allows an additional 80,000 tons to be imported through 2026.The new imports will come into the United States in four quarterly tranches of 20,000 tons. The first tranche will open next week and close in March.
Argentina’s foreign ministry said the additional 80,000 tons will amount to $800 million in Argentine beef exports to the U.S., according to The Hill.
Trump said the order comes after domestic production capacity of beef has failed to keep pace with increasing demand for the meat in recent years, leading to higher prices for American consumers.
“I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to temporarily increase the quantity of [beef] imports,” the proclamation reads. “In addition, I determine that it is appropriate to allocate all of the increased in-quota quantity of beef, as established by this proclamation, to Argentina.”
