President Donald Trump shared an op-ed on social media Sunday that appeared to indicate he was against Netflix’s possible acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery. The post comes as Netflix and Paramount Skydance battle over the media company. Paramount Skydance has asked shareholders to reject Netflix’s $72 billion deal, which is offering $27.75 per WBD share, while Paramount is offering $30.
Trump reposted a commentary from One America News on his Truth Social account that claimed the federal government should intervene to “Stop the Netflix Cultural Takeover.”
“The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission should treat this merger as a top-tier antitrust priority — not only for its market implications, but for what it means for free expression and America’s cultural pluralism,” the op-ed reads. “Netflix should compete, not conquer. And the United States has a responsibility to ensure that no corporation can dominate the national imagination through raw market power and ideological activism.”
The Warner Bros board has already approved Netflix’s offer, stating that it feels it was more secure than Paramount’s, which recently acquired CBS News. If Netflix does purchase WBD then it would have access to all HBO programming.
