President Donald Trump said Tuesday night that Venezuela’s interim government will provide the United States with between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil, which will then be sold at market price. The comment comes after the president indicated Saturday that American oil companies would help Venezuela rebuild its oil infrastructure, which is expected to bring in revenue for the Latin American country.
Trump said in a Truth Social post that Energy Secretary Christopher Wright will oversee the transfer of oil to the United States.
“I am pleased to announce that the Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 MILLION Barrels of High Quality, Sanctioned Oil, to the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”
The president said the oil will be transported by storage ships and taken directly to unloading docks in the U.S.
The move comes after the United States arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife over the weekend. The couple have been indicted in the Southern District of New York on drug trafficking and weapons charges.
