President Donald Trump on Monday claimed to have saved the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in apparent response to warnings from European nations that his bid to acquire Greenland risked fracturing the alliance.”I’m the one who SAVED NATO!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social. During his first term, Trump applied considerable pressure to the bloc’s European members to meet their defense spending targets, to some success.
Warnings from Europe come as Trump hopes to acquire Greenland from Denmark. He previously attempted a purchase during his first term, though Copenhagen was uninterested.
Trump has since renewed his efforts to acquire the island. Following the seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, moreover, European officials have become increasingly concerned that Washington will pursue a military option.
