President Donald Trump on Thursday night rescinded his invitation for Canada to join the new Gaza Board of Peace, after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney left Davos, Switzerland, without signing the board’s charter. The president did not state a reason for withdrawing the invitation, which was offered to the country last week, but it comes after Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said Canada would not pay $1 billion to join the board.
“Dear Prime Minister Carney,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
The move comes after Trump inaugurated the board, which aims to pursue a lasting peace agreement for Gaza, during a speech and signing ceremony at the World Economic Forum on Thursday.
There are currently 59 countries that have joined the board so far, but France, Norway and Sweden have all declined invitations to join the group. The United Kingdom and Russia have not joined so far, but did not decline the invitation.
