President Donald Trump on Thursday insisted he was not planning on using ground troops for the war in Iran, despite U.S. struggles wrap up the conflict on favorable terms.”No, I’m not putting troops anywhere. If I were, I certainly wouldn’t tell you, but I’m not putting troops,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.
Last week, the Pentagon confirmed the deployment of a Marin Expeditionary Unit and an amphibious ready group to the region. Such groups usually include 5,000 marines and several naval vessels.
Polling data has consistently shown that the U.S. public is opposed to ground operations in Iran, even among MAGA voters who largely support the war.
In a recent Ipsos poll for the Quincy Institute, for example, 58% of Trump 2024 voters opposed U.S. troops entering Iran, compared to just 41% who supported that move.
