President Donald Trump on Friday touted the “overwhelming benefit” of tariffs to the United States ahead of an expected ruling from the Supreme Court on his authority to impose them.”Tariffs are an overwhelming benefit to our Nation, as they have been incredible for our National Security and Prosperity (like nobody has ever seen before!),” he posted on Truth Social. “Losing our ability to Tariff other countries who treat us unfairly would be a terrible blow to the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump defied Republican orthodoxy in 2016 with his support for tariffs and imposed them during his first term. He doubled down on their use in his second term by imposing “Liberation Day” tariffs on nearly every nation in a bid to rebalance global trade.
The tariffs have attracted a wave of lawsuits, with some taking aim at his supposed statutory authority to impose them under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The Supreme Court heard oral arguments late last year, with a ruling expected in the near future.
