President Donald Trump claimed Thursday afternoon that there was “no question” that former Special Counsel Jack Smith should be prosecuted for his investigations into the president, based on his testimony on Capitol Hill. Smith told the House Judiciary Committee that he stood by his decision to prosecute Trump for his alleged unlawful retention of classified documents and alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
“Based on his testimony today, there is no question that Deranged Jack Smith should be prosecuted for his actions,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “He destroyed the lives of many innocent people, which has been his history as a prosecutor. At a minimum, he committed large scale perjury.”
Smith claimed that he would make the same decision now to prosecute a former president if he was presented with the same facts, regardless of political party.
“Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in criminal activity,” Smith told the committee in his opening statement. “No one should be above the law in our country and the law required that he be held to account. So that is what I did.”
The former special counsel made his defense in defiance of House Republicans, who assert Smith was primarily motivated by politics in his prosecution of the former president and Republican presidential candidate.
