President Donald Trump on Wednesday quipped that Canada should be “grateful” for the “freebies” it gets from the United States after Prime Minister Mark Carney bemoaned the influence of “hegemons” in his own speech at the World Economic Forum.Trump contended that Canada would benefit from a U.S. acquisition of Greenland through his planned “Golden Dome” air defense platform, which he hopes to deploy on the island.
Carney, in his speech, complained of the influence of major powers and insisted that the “rules-based order” was coming to an end, without mentioning Trump.
The U.S. and Canada are currently mired in trade negotiations that have persisted since Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs in April of last year.
