President Trump announced Monday that he has appointed Louisiana GOP Gov. Jeff Landry as U.S. special envoy to Greenland.”Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World. Congratulations Jeff!,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
In the early months of his presidency, Trump, like other U.S. presidents before him, made a bid to buy Greenland from Denmark.
Greenland, the world’s largest island that is not a continent, is located in the Arctic and is considered a strategic position for the U.S., which has military bases there. More recently, the self-governing island has become of increased interest because of its natural resources including rare earth minerals.
