Trump applauds Thailand and Cambodia agreeing to new ceasefire following weeks of border fighting

President Trump applauded Thailand and Cambodia for signing a fresh ceasefire agreement on Saturday aimed at stopping weeks of heavy fighting along their shared border, where disputed territory has fueled rising tensions and clashes.The pact, which was reached by the two nations’ defense ministers and implemented at noon local time, calls for both sides to halt all military movements and refrain from airspace violations for combat purposes. It also includes a stipulation that Thailand will release 18 Cambodian soldiers held since earlier fighting in July if the ceasefire holds for 72 hours — a key demand from Phnom Penh, according to the Associated Press.
Trump released a statement on Sunday about the agreement. “I am pleased to announce that the breakout fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will stop momentarily, and they will go back to living in PEACE, as per our recently agreed to original Treaty,” he wrote.
“I want to congratulate both great leaders on their brilliance in coming to this rapid and very fair conclusion. It was FAST & DECISIVE, as all of these situations should be! The United States of America, as always, was proud to help!” he added.The recent surge in violence shattered an earlier agreement that had aimed to calm disputes over competing territorial claims. Cambodia’s defense ministry reported that Thai airstrikes, including strikes over the weekend prior to the agreement, struck targets in northwest Cambodia — the latest in a series of escalatory actions that rattled efforts to hold peace talks.  Trump called on the United Nations to do more for world peace.
“With all of the wars and conflicts I have settled and stopped over the last eleven months, EIGHT, perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations, which has been of very little assistance or help in any of them, including the disaster currently going on between Russia and Ukraine,” he wrote on Sunday. “The United Nations must start getting active and involved in WORLD PEACE!”
