Golf legend Tiger Woods pleaded not guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor charges after he was accused of driving under the influence related to a rollover crash in Florida last week.Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told reporters Friday that Woods was driving his Land Rover when it overturned after attempting to overtake a truck on a narrow two-lane road near his residence on Jupiter Island. No injuries were reported.
Investigators said Woods showed signs of impairment, but a breathalyzer did not detect any alcohol in the golf star’s system. However, investigators believe drugs could be behind the impairment. Two hydrocodone pills were allegedly found in his pocket. Hydrocodone is a prescription opioid used to treat severe and chronic pain.
Woods pleaded not guilty to one count of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test after he declined to submit to a urinalysis test following the crash.
Investigators said Woods admitted to taking a couple of prescription pills before the crash but denied drinking alcohol. He also allegedly made multiple mistakes in the field sobriety test, including starting before being told to do so and not counting steps correctly, according to CNN.
Woods also reportedly appeared lethargic, sweated profusely and had bloodshot, glassy eyes with “extremely dilated pupils.”
The athlete also filed a waiver of arraignment and demand for a jury trial in Martin County court. The arraignment is currently scheduled for April 23.
