Thune, Scott back Rep. Kevin Hern to replace Markwayne Mullin

Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., this week threw their support behind Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., to replace Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., after President Donald Trump tapped him to serve as Department of Homeland Security secretary.The pair follow Trump in endorsing Hern’s bid. Notably, Gov. Kevin Stitt, R-Okla., will appoint a replacement to complete Mullin’s term. That replacement will not be eligible to run for a full term in November under state law, however, Politico reported.
“Kevin Hern is a proven conservative leader and fighter for Oklahomans in the House, where he has championed our shared Republican agenda,” Thune said in a statement. “He will be a great asset in the Senate and has my full support and endorsement.”
“Kevin Hern is a principled conservative, Oklahoma-first leader who knows what it means to create jobs and unleash prosperity,” Scott said. “He is a fighter for President Trump’s agenda, and we’re excited to welcome him to our Republican majority as Oklahoma’s next Senator.”
The endorsement from top Senate leadership and Trump sets up Hern to sweep the primary, which in Oklahoma, practically guarantees his election to the Senate.
