Some of our friends and former friends in the MAGA movement are unhappy with the current U.S. campaign, fought alongside Israel, against the Islamic Republic of Iran. They regard this as an illegal and unconstitutional foreign war of choice, arguing it is conducted for no defensible reason and serves no defensible American interest.
To assert those things requires ignoring not only Iran’s 1979 attack on the U.S. embassy and its holding of American hostages for 444 days—an act for which Iran has never apologized or paid reparations. It also requires ignoring the reality that Iran’s violence is directed not just against Israel or Americans stationed in the Middle East but against American citizens living their lives within the sovereign boundaries of the United States.
