The decline of America’s entertainment industry was on full display this past weekend at the Grammy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. Rather than gathering around the office water cooler on Monday to discuss the musical performances, we were left debating which artist made the most inane and foolish political comment of the night.
When millions of Americans remember the rantings of a 24-year-old celebrity rather than a single memorable performance, lyric, or moment of artistic excellence, it’s a sign that America’s premier entertainment institutions have lost the plot and their purpose. As Herb Brooks, the coach of the famed USA Hockey team that beat the Russians in the 1980s, would say, ” You don’t have enough talent to win on talent alone.” Today’s entertainment industry seems to believe the opposite, using politics as a crutch for relevance and attention.
