    The $1.2 trillion question: Can America afford its “iron dome” missile defense dream?

    The Congressional Budget Office estimates developing, deploying and operating an “Iron Dome for America” missile defense system would cost approximately $1.2 trillion over 20 years.
    President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 27, 2025, directing the Pentagon to develop a next-generation missile shield against ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles.
    The proposed system would include four interceptor layers, including a space-based component, two wide-area ground-based layers and a regional ground-based sector layer.
    Critics question whether such a massive investment could be overwhelmed by countermeasures from peer competitors like Russia and China, who possess thousands of nuclear warheads.
    The debate echoes Cold War-era discussions about missile defense, including Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, which was never fully implemented due to technical and cost concerns.
