The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a New York state judge cannot redraw GOP Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’ House district, which consists of Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. The ruling comes after Malliotakis asked the Supreme Court to wade in last month, after a New York court ruled that Malliotakis’s district had improperly disenfranchised black and Hispanic voters.
The ruling and request comes as the Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on the Voting Rights Act, which could dramatically alter the rules of racial representation in the process ahead of the November midterm elections.
The order appeared to be split along political lines, The Hill reported, with the three liberal justices dissenting and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito leading the conservative majority.
