Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Thursday celebrated American progress in destroying the Iranian military since the start of the war.”Twenty-seven days ago, Iran had a modern military. Never in recorded history has a nation’s military been so quickly and effectively neutralized,” Hegseth declared during a Cabinet meeting. “Operation epic Fury is not an endless war. It’s a decisive campaign with clear objectives to destroy Iran’s military, offensive military capabilities can ensure they never obtain a nuclear weapon. This is stuff for the history books. This is stuff for legacy.”
Hegseth made the remarks as the war nears the one-month mark. The Trump administration has faced considerable scrutiny for its handling of the war, with 64% of American voters expressing disapproval of the president on the issue in the latest Fox News poll.
Iran has, thus far, rejected proposed ceasefire agreements and negotiations, though ongoing, appear stalled. Trump has repeatedly sought aid from European allies in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which the Iranians have effectively closed since the start of the war. During the meeting, Trump personally expressed his disappointment in NATO members for failing to provide assistance.
