A study published in the journal Environmental Research reported an association between residential exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) – the kind produced by power lines and household wiring – and an elevated risk of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in children, according to an Environmental Health News (EHN) report. [1][2]
The research was conducted in Mexico City, where more than 5% of children were exposed to ELF-MF levels above 0.3 microtesla (?T), higher than the global average for exposure, the report stated. The study measured magnetic field exposure in children’s bedrooms and found that residential exposure above 0.4 ?T was significantly associated with an increased risk of developing CNS tumors, according to the EHN report.
