The State Department confirmed Tuesday that several detained Americans have been released from Venezuela under the country’s interim government. The move marks the first release of U.S. prisoners since the United States arrested former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, last week and took them to New York City to face federal conspiracy, drugs and weapons charges. The country is currently being led by Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.
A State Department official told the New York Times that at least three Americans have been released so far, including one who was held in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
“We welcome the release of detained Americans in Venezuela,” the State Department said in a statement. “This is an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities.”
Venezuela began releasing many political prisoners last week, which President Donald Trump claimed is a “very important and smart gesture,” that indicates it is seeking peace.
