The Senate voted Tuesday afternoon to begin debate on the new Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which requires people to present proof of citizenship to register to vote and requires Americans to show ID when voting.The Senate voted 51-48 to proceed to debate on the bill, despite Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski voting no and North Carolina GOP Sen. Thom Tillis not voting.
President Donald Trump has threatened not to endorse any Republican senators in the midterms who oppose the legislation, of which a similar version already passed the House last month. He has lauded the bill as his top legislative priority.
