Schumer says Senate will attempt next Iran War Powers resolution vote next week

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday the upper chamber is planning to attempt another vote on the Iran War Powers resolution next week, despite already failing to pass it twice.The war powers resolution would require President Donald Trump to get permission from Congress in order to use military force on Iran. The Senate tried to pass the resolution last month amid the military conflict in the Middle East.
“Congress must reassert its authority, especially at this dangerous moment. No president, Democrat or Republican, should take this country to war alone. Not now. Not ever,” Schumer told reporters.
“Republicans will once again have the opportunity to join Democrats and end this reckless war of choice,” he continued. “The public must demand that Republicans join with us to approve the War Powers Act.”
The resolution comes after the president faced backlash for threatening to wipe out Iran’s civilization if the country did not agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday night. The U.S. and Iran have since agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
