Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday that the United States welcomes the Iraqi government’s decision to take in Islamic State terrorists following instability in northern Syria. The Iraqi government has agreed to accept roughly 7,000 ISIS prisoners amid concern that the inmates could escape from detention as the Syrian government attempts to take control of the area from Kurdish-led forces.
The U.S. military has already begun moving ISIS prisoners into Iraq, United States Central Command said Wednesday, which it claimed is necessary to prevent a breakout that would pose a direct threat to the U.S. and regional security.
“The United States appreciates the Iraqi government’s leadership and supports this bold initiative to ensure that ISIS terrorists cannot roam freely throughout the region,” Rubio said in a statement. “As a member of the Coalition to Defeat ISIS, Iraq is on the front line in confronting the threat that ISIS still poses to all countries.”
Rubio said the transfer of non-Iraqi terrorists into the Middle Eastern country will be temporary and urged other countries to repatriate their citizens and prosecute them for their crimes, claiming it was “critical” to preventing an “ISIS resurgence.”
