Virginia is turning into a key battleground state into which both parties are pouring massive amounts of resources in an attempt to determine the face of the state and, perhaps, the makeup of Congress headed into the 2026 midterms. Particularly, Democrats have been flooding the airwaves with big-name political figures like former President Barack Obama, while Republicans are on the ground with what amounts to a volunteer army in an attempt to keep Democrats from ruining the state for good.
As background, the 2025 gubernatorial election and state legislature elections were a disaster for Republicans, as the state GOP ran a terrible gubernatorial candidate, Winsome Earle Sears, who dragged down the Republicans generally and led to the Democrats managing to win control of the state legislature, the governor’s office, the Lt. Gov. position, and the state attorney general position.
