Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar was sprayed with an unknown substance while speaking at a town hall Tuesday night in Minneapolis, where she called for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign. An unidentified man ran up to the lawmaker, who was speaking behind a podium, and sprayed her with the liquid before he was tackled by security. Omar, who was initially pulled away by her team, resumed speaking after the altercation.
“Here’s the reality that people like this ugly man don’t understand; we are Minnesota strong and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us,” she said.
It was not clear what the substance was, but one member of the lawmaker’s team remarked that it “smells terrible,” and Omar does not appear seriously harmed, according to Fox News.
The incident, which occurred during Omar’s first in-person town hall meeting of the year in North Minneapolis, received criticism from Republican lawmakers, including South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace.
“I am deeply disturbed to learn that … Ilhan Omar was attacked at a town hall today,” she wrote on X. “Regardless of how vehemently I disagree with her rhetoric, and I do, no elected official should face physical attacks. This is not who we are.”
