Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged President Donald Trump on Tuesday to extend his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by two weeks as negotiations continue to progress “steadily, strongly and powerfully.” Trump has given Iran until 8 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday to agree to reopen the strait or face serious repercussions that could include the elimination of a “whole civilization.”
“Diplomatic efforts for peaceful settlement of the ongoing war in the Middle East are progressing steadily, strongly and powerfully with the potential to lead to substantive results in near future,” Sharif wrote on X. “To allow diplomacy to run its course, I earnestly request President Trump to extend the deadline for two weeks.
“Pakistan, in all sincerity, requests the Iranian brothers to open Strait of Hormuz for a corresponding period of two weeks as a goodwill gesture,” he continued. “We also urge all warring parties to observe a ceasefire everywhere for two weeks to allow diplomacy to achieve conclusive termination of war, in the interest of long-term peace and stability in the region.”
The proposal comes as the Iranian envoy to the United Nations asserted his country would not accept a temporary ceasefire, but was willing to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Axios that the president is “aware of the proposal, and a response will come.”
