One person was shot Tuesday in an incident involving United States Border Patrol in Arizona, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. The person, who has not been identified, was shot in southern Pima County at around 7:30 a.m., according to NBC News. Details on the shooting were not immediately clear, but the Santa Rita Fire District said the person is in critical condition.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, which is still ongoing, with the assistance of the FBI. The department said it is normal for them to lead the investigation when a federal agent is involved in a shooting incident within their county.
“We ask the community to remain patient and understanding as this investigation moves forward,” the PCSD said in a statement. “PCSD will thoroughly examine all aspects of the incident, however, these investigations are complex and require time.”
The incident comes just days after a federal agent fatally shot a protester in Minneapolis, and weeks after another protester was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in the same city.
