A study published on April 4 in the Nordic medical journal Acta Paediatrica shows that adolescents who are medically “transitioned” into a new gender identity become far more likely to spiral down into psychological crisis. The paper, “Psychiatric Morbidity Among Adolescents and Young Adults Who Contacted Specialised Gender Identity Services in Finland in 1996–2019: A Register Study,” uses a feature of Finland’s unique hybrid medical system to track outcomes following pediatric sex change procedures: each citizen has “an 11-digit personal identification number” for medical purposes.
