Netflix is releasing a movie called the “Queen of Coal” to American audiences Dec. 19, which will follow a “trans woman” as the individual pursues their goal of working in the mines.
The Netflix description notes that the Spanish film follows a “trans woman” that must navigate a “town steeped in superstition and patriarchy” to conquer their dreams of earning a wage in the coal mines. Though the production was created by the Spanish company Morena Films, Netflix is set to add the film to its American repertoire right before Christmas, according to a banner on the company’s website.
“The Queen of Coal does a disservice to women coal miners who earned their spot in the industry. There are plenty of trailblazing women to profile. Why not make a movie or documentary about them?” Director of Independent Women’s Center for Energy and Conservation Gabriella Hoffman told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Netflix missed the mark here. Viewers want to watch films without a political lecture and the erasure of women. … Woke content like this could complicate potential merger talks with Warner Bros Discovery.” (RELATED: Netflix Gobbles Up Warner Bros. In Over $80,000,000,000 Deal)
Netflix struck an agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal valued at more than $80 billion on Friday. Paramount fired back with a rival bid on Monday.
Co-CEO of Netflix Greg Peters said he is “very confident that regulators should, and will, approve” the deal, and co-CEO Ted Sarandos said Monday that President Donald Trump’s interest in the deal aligns with theirs, “which is to create and protect jobs,” according to Business Insider.

The upcoming film, originally titled “Miss Carbón,” was released in June and “inspired by true events,” according to Morena Film’s website. The production stars Lux Pascal, a “transgender activist” that “came out” as transgender in February 2021 after identifying as “nonbinary,” and is also the sibling of Hollywood actor Pedro Pascal, according to multiple reports.
Notably, Concerned Women for America released a report Monday that says 41% of kids’ shows on Netflix contain LGBTQ+ themes. The report also documents some of the backlash Netflix has received in recent months over its liberal values, some of which include “diversity” and “inclusion.”
“41% of G-rated series, and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series on Netflix contain LGBTQ+ content,” the report states.
