Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday that President Donald Trump will receive the “Israel Prize” for his role in helping to end the war with Hamas. The prize is considered the highest civilian award in Israel, which is usually given to Israeli citizens. But Trump will receive the Israeli “peace” prize, which has never been bestowed on a foreign leader, according to the Times of Israel.
The announcement comes after Trump met with the foreign leader at his Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“We decided to break a convention too, or create a new one, and that is to award the Israel Prize,” Netanyahu said. “In almost our 80 years we’ve never awarded [it] to a non-Israeli, and we’re going to award it this year to President Trump, for his tremendous contributions to Israel and the Jewish people.”
Trump helped orchestrate a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas earlier this year. The first phase of the peace agreement has already been completed, but the second phase, which includes the disarming of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, could begin as soon as the end of the month.
Trump said Monday that Hamas will have a short time to disarm itself but did not indicate how long.
Trump said that the award was a “really great honor,” and is considering attending Israel’s Independence Day celebrations in April to formally receive the award.
