The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is implementing mandatory ethnic studies in its high schools by the 2026-2027 school year, with elementary and middle schools expected to follow course for 2027-2028.
The mandates require school districts to offer courses on race, ethnicity, and Indigeneity as part of an Ethnic Studies program created in 2023 by the Minnesota state legislature and will require teaching the state’s revised K-12 social studies that include three Ethnic Studies concepts: Identity, Resistance, and Ways of Knowing and Methodologies.
