A Minnesota daycare center claimed Wednesday that it experienced “extreme vandalism” as a result of a viral video that included allegations the center had engaged in fraud. Conservative independent reporter Nick Shirley shared the video on YouTube recently that showed in-person visits to several licensed childcare centers in Minneapolis, which appeared empty despite receiving state grants.
Nokomis DayCare Center employees said they told police that the daycare was broken into on Tuesday morning and that a lot of important documents were missing, including documents on the children enrolled at the center and its employees.
“This is devastating news and we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community as one video made by a specific individual made this all happen,” Nasrulah Mohamed, a manager at the day care center, said in a press conference. “We’ve been receiving hateful messages through our voice notes threatening us since the past couple of days including one that happened yesterday morning when the break-in, after the break-in.”
The manager claimed the fallout from the video has been brutal for the Somali American community in Minnesota, which was attacked after several Somali Americans were linked to the fraudulent “Feeding Our Future” nonprofit, per The Hill.
“I want to say that there are hundreds of day cares out there, Somali day cares that are out there and we all help each of our children and everyone in our community,” Mohamed said. “We are not a part of any harmful things that are being said. We have no problem with the [Child Care Assistance Program] and our licensing has been good, even the inspections. I want to say no intimidation is going to stop us from what is happening and upgrading our community.”
The comment comes after the Trump administration pulled funding for the state over the fraud allegations, which have been going on for years but recently came back into the spotlight. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Monday that over 60 people have been convicted of fraud in Minnesota so far, and 98 people have been charged.
