The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announced Thursday that it would no longer participate in the investigation into the fatal shooting Wednesday of a woman by a federal law enforcement officer.Renee Good was fatally shot in Minneapolis after obstructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with her vehicle. One agent fired into the vehicle as she attempted to drive away, though video footage shows the officer in her path.
Minnesota BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said in a statement that the decision to withdraw his bureau’s role in the investigation comes after the FBI decided not to share access to materials required for a “thorough and independent” review.
“Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands,” Evans said. “As a result, the BCA has reluctantly withdrawn from the investigation.
“The BCA Force Investigations Unit was designed to ensure consistency, accountability and public confidence, none of which can be achieved without full cooperation and jurisdictional clarity,” he added.
The BCA unit was created in 2020, in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, to “provide an independent, consistent and trusted mechanism for investigating use of force incidents involving law enforcement officers.”
Evans said the bureau is ready to work with the FBI and Justice Department if the administration changes its mind.
“We expect the FBI to conduct a thorough and complete investigation and that the full investigative file will be shared with the appropriate prosecutorial authorities at both the state and federal levels,” he added.
