Watching Louis Theroux’s documentary, Inside the Manosphere, I couldn’t help noticing that I was not a member of that movie’s intended audience. And nor, most probably, are you. Mr. Theroux is like the fat boy in Charles Dickens’s Pickwick Papers. He wants to make your flesh creep with horror, and he does this with successive cinematic portraits of internet “influencers” who have managed to make a living, apparently, by presenting teenage boys with images of feral masculinity designed to send liberal and feminist-adjacent folks to their fainting couches.
I say that the online influencers pitch their wares to teenage boys, or their mental equivalents, because nobody who was already a man would likely be interested in the sort of “lifestyle” porn that the so-called “manosphere” deals in, or believe that the highly performative masculinity that Mr. Theroux highlights throughout is any kind of guide for living in the real world.
