New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn into his post just after midnight on Thursday morning in an intimate ceremony below the city. The mayor, a Democratic socialist, was elected in November after defeating former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani was sworn in by New York Attorney General Letitia James in a ceremony that took approximately 10 minutes, according to the New York Times.
Mamdani also placed his left hand on two Qurans, instead of a Bible, to recite the oath of office. The socialist is now New York City’s first Muslim mayor.
A public inauguration will take place on the steps of City Hall later Thursday, which will see Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders administer a ceremonial oath of office, and New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will deliver the opening remarks.
The public inauguration is expected to take place at 1 p.m. Eastern.
