President Donald Trump isn’t focused on the voters’ top issues, and they are judging him harshly for it, a recent New York Times/Siena College poll revealed.Overall, 41% of registered voters said Trump was “generally focused” on the right issues, while 57% said he was focused on the wrong issues. The top issues for those voters were the economy, with 19% ranking it as the top issue facing the nation. Immigration placed second with 12%, tying with “Republicans.” A further 11% said the “state of democracy” while 9% chose inflation.
Trump himself has repeatedly praised the economy, often pointing to the stock market, but voters don’t seem to feel any better off than one year ago.
Overall, 31% said the economy was better than when he took over, 27% said conditions had not changed, and 41% said things had gotten worse. A majority of 51% said his policies had made the country less affordable while just 24% said the opposite.
On the economy generally, he received a 40% approval rating and a 58% disapproval rating.
Conducted Jan. 12-17, the survey questioned 1,625 registered voters.
