An earthquake measuring at least 7.4 on the Richter scale shook parts of northern Indonesia early Thursday, destroying or damaging hundreds of buildings and leaving at least one person dead.The quake’s epicenter was in the Molucca Sea, around 75 miles from the closest inhabited island, initially triggering a tsunami warning for the Indonesian islands surrounding the area. But the warning was lifted after a short time.
Several cities on islands near the epicenter issued evacuation notices.
The United States Geological Survey reported multiple aftershocks in the area, and said additional tremors could be felt for days.
