New York’s LaGuardia airport is expected to operate at a reduced capacity through Friday, amid an investigation into a fatal collision over the weekend that forced the Federal Aviation Administration to keep one runway closed. An Air Canada Express jet and a firetruck collided late Sunday night at the New York airport, resulting in the deaths of both airplane pilots. Dozens of the flight’s 72 passengers and four crew members were injured in the collision, per CBS News.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy confirmed Monday night that one runway resumed operations earlier in the day, but the site of the collision on runway 4 will remain closed through Friday at 7 a.m., according to CNN.
Flights from LaGuardia also resumed Monday shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told reporters that the Trump administration is working to investigate the collision and address passenger safety. The fire truck was reportedly in the runway area responding to an incident on another flight and had been given clearance from air traffic control to cross that runway.
“We send our deepest condolences to their families,” Duffy said. “It’s incredibly sad. It’s troubling. And I just want to let America know that we are working our hearts out to make sure that when people travel, whether by rail, or by car, or by air, that they travel safely.”
