Deriving its title from the Hopi term for “life out of balance,” Koyaanisqatsi is an unorthodox 1982 film juxtaposing images of pristine natural beauty with clips of bustling urban life. Accompanied by an ethereal soundtrack, this thought-provoking cinematic collage depicts how a frenetically accumulating and indulgent humanity had wantonly despoiled the planet and become alienated from the natural order and, indeed, itself.
