The Trump-Kennedy Center said Friday that it’s outdoor skating rink was vandalized in a “targeted attack,” after someone poured a “toxic chemical” on the ice, prompting the performing arts venue to cancel its performances. The incident occurred Friday morning when someone poured a black-brown substance on the ice, damaging the arena. No suspect has been publicly identified for the vandalism, and it was not immediately clear what the chemical was.
The Trump-Kennedy Center leadership said the incident was not merely a protest against the venue’s name change, but was an actual act of vandalism, according to Fox News.
“Today, a targeted attack on the Trump Kennedy Center vandalized and destroyed our outdoor arena, causing severe damage that we unfortunately must cancel tonight’s performance, but we are working feverishly to complete repairs so programming can resume tomorrow,” the center’s Vice President of Public Relations Roma Daravi told the outlet.
“We have turned over video footage to the authorities who are investigating this calculated, malicious attack and hold those responsible accountable,” she added.
The incident comes as the Trump administration and the center’s leadership make significant changes to the venue, including adding President Donald Trump’s name to the building and announcing that it will be closed down for a two-year renovation project.
Several acts at the center have canceled their performances over the changes and the Washington National Opera has pulled its residency from the venue in protest.
