The Justice Department charged a man Friday for allegedly selling a gun to the suspected Old Dominion University shooter despite the suspect’s criminal record. Authorities charged Kenya Chapman with making a false statement during a firearm purchase and engaging in the business of firearms dealing without a license after he allegedly sold the weapon to Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Army National Guard member, who used it to kill one person and injure two others during the shooting Thursday.
Jalloh was barred from possessing a gun because of his previous felony conviction for attempting to aid the Islamic State. He was sentenced for the crime in 2017.
Chapman reportedly told investigators that he stole the gun last year and recently sold it to Jalloh, who claimed he needed the weapon for self-defense as a delivery driver, according to the Associated Press.
Chapman also allegedly admitted to knowing Jalloh spent some time behind bars but denied knowing he had a previous felony conviction or that he would use the weapon to carry out an attack.
Dominique Evans, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Norfolk field office, said there has been no mention of the ongoing war in Iran during the investigation.
