The House voted on Thursday to table a motion to impeach President Donald Trump. The so-called privileged motion to force the House to act was introduced by Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green, according to The Hill. A Republican motion to table the resolution passed by a vote of 237-140, with 47 Democrats voting present and 23 voting with the Republicans to table it. Tabling means to set it aside indefinitely without further debate.
Green has repeatedly introduced resolutions to impeach President Trump, both during his first term in office and now three times this year, since Trump’s return to office.
His latest resolution has two impeachment articles. The first article is for “Abuse of Presidential Power by Calling for the Execution of Members of Congress.” That was in reference to Trump’s response last month to the video made by six Democrats telling members of the military that they don’t have to follow unlawful orders.
Trump posted his response on Truth Social: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH.” Later that day, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified the president’s message: “To suggest and encourage that active duty service members defy the chain of command is a very dangerous thing for sitting members of Congress to do,” she said. “And they should be held accountable. And that’s what the president wants to see.”
The second article of impeachment is for what Green described as “Abuse of Presidential Power to Intimidate Federal Judges in Violation of the Separation of Powers and Independence of the Judiciary.”
The House Democratic leadership, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), voted present, and issued a joint statement noting that there had not been any investigation or hearings on the matters.
“None of that serious work has been done, with the Republican majority focused solely on rubber stamping Donald Trump’s extreme agenda. Accordingly, we will be voting ‘present’ on today’s motion to table the impeachment resolution as we continue our fight to make life more affordable for everyday Americans,” their statement said.
