WASHINGTON (CN) — A rare House Ethics Committee hearing to examine fraud accusations against Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick moved ahead Thursday after her attorney failed to convince a panel of lawmakers that the congressional probe would bias jurors in ongoing criminal proceedings.
Members of the bipartisan committee pushed back on claims from Florida-based attorney William Barzee that the ethics probe ran afoul of Cherfilus-McCormick’s Fifth Amendment right to remain silent — pointing out that she would not need to testify before the House.
