A Democratic resolution that would have halted the conflict in Iran was defeated Thursday when Chris Smith, R-N.J., closed the session in which House members would have voted on the measure.Lawmakers are on a two-week spring recess, but Maryland Rep. Glenn Ivey and other Democrats held a “pro forma” session, hoping to pass the resolution by unanimous consent, NBC News reported.
The effort followed Trump’s statement in the lead up to the deadline for negotiations with Iran, where Trump said “a whole civilization will die tonight.”
Smith gaveled out of the session without calling on Ivey, which solicited howls and cries of “Shame” from Democrats.
