Homeland Security confirms TSA workers have received some back pay after Trump order

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Monday that Transportation Security Administration workers have received some of the paychecks they missed during the ongoing DHS shutdown, after President Donald Trump ordered the payments last week.Trump issued the presidential memorandum Friday as Congress remains at a stalemate over DHS funding, causing a partial government shutdown that began Feb. 14.
The president claimed the shutdown caused an emergency situation and ordered DHS and Office of Management and Budget to use funds that have a reasonable “nexus” to TSA operations to provide employees with the compensation and benefits they would have received without the shutdown.
DHS spokesperson Lauren Bis told The Hill that those paychecks and benefits began hitting employees’ bank accounts Monday, but there could still be some delays in paying TSA officers back in full.
“Most TSA employees received a retroactive paycheck today that included at least two full paychecks covering pay periods 4 and 5 today,” Bis said, adding that the department is “working aggressively” with the relevant financial institutions “to complete processing for the half paycheck they are owed from pay period 3 as soon as possible.”
Bis also said some employees could see delays because of “financial institution processing times or issues with their direct deposit.”
It is not clear when other DHS employees, including Coast Guard troops and Federal Emergency Management Agency workers, are expected to be paid for working through the shutdown.
