‘Greys Anatomy’ star Eric Dane dies from ALS at the age of 53

Eric Dane, known for playing Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” died Thursday at 53-years-old, following a nearly year-long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS.Dane, who was also known for his role in “Euphoria,” announced the diagnosis last year and channeled the illness into advocacy for legislation regarding the disease. 
He also sought to raise awareness of the condition, which initially impacted the right side of his body, by playing a firefighter with the disease on “Brilliant Minds.”  
Dane’s passing was confirmed by his publicist, who said the actor died Thursday afternoon where he was surrounded by friends and loved ones, including daughters Billie and Georgia Dane and wife Rebecca Gayheart. 
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” Dane’s publicist said in a statement. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
