Republican lawmakers are battling over a controversial illegal immigration bill that critics argue is basically amnesty in disguise. The legislation, introduced last year by Republican Representative María Elvira Salazar of Florida and dubbed the DIGNIDAD (Dignity) Act of 2025, would establish a pathway to legal status for potentially millions of illegal immigrants in the United States – something Salazar claims most Americans support. But opponents, led by Salazar’s fellow Republican, Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas, have slammed the bill as “a terrible betrayal of [GOP] voters.”
