Israeli military forces carried out a series of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip late Friday and into Saturday, with local officials reporting that at least 32 people were killed. Palestinian emergency responders and health authorities said the deaths included women and children in multiple locations across the territory, though independent verification of these figures was not available.
According to Gaza’s civil defense agency, rescue teams recovered the bodies of 28 people from rubble in several areas, including in Gaza City and other densely populated neighborhoods.
The agency said about a quarter of those killed were children and around a third were women, and that strikes hit residential buildings, tents where displaced people were sheltering, and a police station, according to the Times of Israel.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes targeted commanders and operatives from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, along with weapons storage, manufacturing facilities, and rocket launch sites. Israel described the operation as a response to what it said were violations of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire that has been in place since last October.
The military cited an incident in which armed men exited a tunnel near Rafah, calling it a breach of the truce.
